Overview

Design is all around us, and various tools are used to make them a reality. Among these tools is Figma, which is a prototyping tool used by designers, engineers, and other creatives to create interactive products. It is a lightweight, cloud-based, vector graphics editor with a focus on web and mobile apps. The application is perfect for editing vector graphics and user interface (UI) design. Figma, unlike most of its competitors, also offers design capabilities for other creative disciplines, such as architecture, engineering, and product design.

Our verdict

Figma is a collaborative interface design tool and it has become a go-to for our team when building modern, scalable products. The brand’s mission is to make design accessible to everyone, and that is evident in every aspect of its product. The application is an all-in-one solution for designing, prototyping, collaborating, and sharing experiences.

When it comes to making sure your work looks great, you may find that most software does not support vector graphics; with Figma, you can edit each layer and it will look sharp on any device. In addition, you can draw straight lines using the mouse: no more fiddling with your laptop’s guides, or trying to get perfect ellipses from a tiny curve tool.

The biggest benefit of Figma is that it is all-encompassing and makes the whole process a lot easier for designers. No longer do you have to spend time creating mockups or figuring out how the completed product will look. A wireframe can be created and exported directly into any program. Designers who need the maximum amount of flexibility when constructing wireframes will find this program helpful. It’s easy to add links between your pages and customize the size of your code. The colour of your pages can also be changed if you need something other than white or black. The application also offers powerful features such as image masks and customizable shapes for creating wireframes and mockups so that you can get user feedback early in the development process.

In addition, Figma is ideal for designers, product managers, and engineers that want to work on a single document at the same time. The software has a modern interface and design system that enables users to create and edit vector graphics in a collaborative environment. All team members can seamlessly participate in the workflow using comments and reactions, enabling seamless collaboration among designers.

Pros

Figma is a free and easy-to-use software for web design that can be used to create both static and interactive websites. The application supports HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript. One of the greatest features of Figma is its ease of use. You can use the program on a Mac or PC and you have access to all the tools you need. No matter what level you are at in web design, the interface is easy to understand yet powerful enough to tackle nearly any project. This, in conjunction with the multitude of themes available, allows for professional results when it comes to designing websites. The app offers version history.

Cons

Figma requires an active internet connection at all times. Due to the software’s cloud-based nature, it cannot function if a computer isn’t connected to the internet.

It is limited to vector art compared to software design programs such as Adobe Illustrator or other competitive products on the market. Although Figma’s wireless access is convenient, it leaves your files vulnerable to hacking and/or theft from the internet, whereas competitors such as Adobe Photoshop are safer and not as easily accessible by others online who have access to the same program that you use.

Features of Figma

You can select the exact colours you need for your design or brand. A full RGB colour spectrum is available. Human interface guidelines are available. You can preview every element of your design with real thumbnails. Full integration of icons and fonts is available. You can search and import literally thousands of free icons from around the web. Figma is easy to use and works on any device. Users can view Figma prototypes on mobile devices also through Figma Mirror companion apps on IOS and Android. In addition to providing a great user interface, Figma focuses heavily on real-time collaboration. It provides all the tools needed to create vector designs, as well as prototyping tools and illustrations.

Alternatives

No good software is without substitutes, and Figma is no exception. Here are some of the best alternatives out there:

  1. InVision: This is the design collaboration platform that’s all about sounding good. It’s a super-charged wireframing tool that lets you turn static designs into interactive prototypes. It provides tools and resources to help organizations of all sizes and missions better understand, design, and build the digital experiences their audiences demand. With the Invision platform, you can share and review designs and prototypes between team members quickly and easily.
  2. Axure RP: Currently, Figma is getting much attention due to its usability and appearance options. But some designers find it hard to switch from Axure RP to Figma. And it is understandable because Axure allows creating prototypes with a great user experience. You can even create interactive wireframes and clickable prototypes. Axure gives you an opportunity to work entirely in the browser. It supports files in all popular formats including image, CSS, HTML, PHP, etc. It is an advanced prototype and documentation tool for creating interactive wireframes, mockups, and prototypes. Axure is used by UX and UI professionals to create effective user interfaces rapidly.
  3. Adobe XD: This is a newer app for creating visual design prototypes and wireframes. It’s by Adobe, the same company that makes Photoshop and Illustrator, and works with those apps to create seamless visuals that look great whether you’re designing for web, mobile or print. It’s a free download on Windows, Mac and mobile devices. You can design and animate on the go with it.
  4. Lucidchart: This is an online diagramming tool that’s great for creating and collaborating on flowcharts, wireframes, organization charts, and other types of diagrams. The app is free to use and with no limits on the number of users or team members. Lucidchart integrates with all the major cloud services. It can be used for mockups, wireframe design, process flows, and UML diagrams. It is also user-friendly.

Plans and pricing

With Figma, you can use the free plan to your advantage a whole lot. It is the best option for individuals and small groups that are just getting started. Especially if you have a small team of two and need to work on only three projects at the same time.

You will also be able to view who has changed (called “version history”) for a period of thirty days. With this feature, you can see what kind of changes have been made. If you would like more features, then you’ll need to upgrade to the Professional plan, which costs $12 per editor per month, or the Organization plan, which costs $45 per editor per month.

Conclusion

Figma features a strong function set and solid design ability, making it a good choice for beginners. Consequently, it benefits designers by simplifying collaboration and providing convenience. The use of Figma as a tool can thus benefit anyone in their design process.
